Theatre in Second Life – Meghamora Woodward, Phorkyad Acropolis • Elizabethan C

Over the past few years a number of diverse production companies have emerged in Second Life, presenting theatrical work with cast, crew and audience scattered across continents while still providing the immediate intimacy of live performance. We will talk about issues and challenges facing theatre arts in Second Life, discuss technical and philosophical aspects of telepresence, staging, and viewpoint, and open a discussion about what comes next in Second Life theatre as we learn how to harness the intrinsic power of the new medium and tell stories of our new society. This panel will include an excerpt from Stephen Schrum’s digital adaptation of his play Aliens! 3 Miles, Turn Left, to be staged in Second Life in the summer of 2009.

Thur. Aug 13 3:00p

Workshop: Adapting Live Performance to SL – Lailu Loon • Elizabethan C

This hands-on workshop offers participants to experiment in adapting short scenes/plays to SL (participants are welcome to bring their own scenes). Somewhere between producing live theater, films and games, the process of virtual performance requires new ways of looking at presentation possibilities.

Sat. Aug 15, 3:30p

Performance of I Gave At The Office – Led by Lailu Loon • Grand Ballroom

An original live farce combining virtual performers (Rowan Shamroy, Marin Mielziner, Moxy Barracuda, Thungergas Menges) and physically present performers (CallieDel Boa, Lauren Weyland, Candi Zephaniah) on SL and the internet (www.ideajuice.com). Rekka Berchot and OhMy Shalala designed the sets and props. More info at www.thesanitypatrol.com/Theater/virtual.htm.

Meghamora woodward and I are doing a session on Theatre (during our Thursday performance track) at 1:30. I'll be talking about some of the theory and practice of SL theatre (and promise not to be boring!). I'll follow it with a performance of ALIENS! 3 MILES, TURN LEFT, recently presented in SL. We'll spend the rest of the time discussing ideas about the future of SL Theatre.

Awesome, Stephen, I look forward to attending your track!

I will also be presenting theatre on both the EdTrack (Saturday @ 10 AM) and BizTrack (Friday @ 5 PM) - namely, about the SL Shakespeare Company! I'll be posting my ppt to http://slideshare.net/inacentaur/

I'm thrilled that so many theater people will be presenting!! My workshop will be a more hands-on approach (Thursday at 3:00 pm). The presentation of I GAVE AT THE OFFICE will include the SL performance, along with a real life component for those at SLCC, both of which will be streamed at www.ideajuice.com. The goal is to bridge SL with real life theater.

Sharon: Sounds fun! What's the RL component?

We're looking to show some of the RL issues that come up during a performance, and the dramas between actors. This is an experiment, but I'm hopeful that this will lead to a larger project that uses both live and virtual theater.

Dramas between actors? I prefer my drama on stage.
Comment by Meghan Moran on August 5, 2009 at 3:55pm
Ah, but we all know that the drama rarely stays onstage. ;)

At our session, Megh will be dealing with Mixed/Blended Reality, and I will be coming from a theatre conference in New York where I will have talked about doing Blended Reality performance (and will probably be told there why it is evil! Virtual theatre is evil! Etc. Just like every year...).
